As Nature Intended

Today was a public holiday and I had promised my little one that because the weather was going to be gorgeous we would spend the day at Green Point Park. The only problem was, I had woken up with a delightful bout of flu – lovely. As I crawled out of bed with a hoarse throat and pounding headache my daughters’ dreams for the day went sailing out of the window.

I could see she was devastated, so we made a deal. I was going to medicate myself and crawl back into bed to try and gather some strength, she was going to play quietly while I did.

She was brilliant! No arguing, no whining, she even tucked me in and made sure my hot water bottle was nestled against my back.

Needless to say we went to the park – it was truly the best thing we could have done.

There is a particular energy linked to playgrounds. Everywhere you looked kids were running and jumping and climbing on every square inch of equipment. Teeny small people to larger kids, they were playing, and so were their parents! Babies attempting their first steps, toddlers hanging off ropes and teenagers looking very cool until they hit the swings – whooping for joy like 2 year old’s.

After weeks of battling with my daughter’s school, battling with myself, straining against the way things have become, I was suddenly immersed in the way they were meant to be.

Sunshine, laughter, peace, fun and freedom all tangled together in a ball of utter joy. How foolish we have all become in our march towards better technology and a more civilized society.

No striving, no machinations, no backbiting, no lies.

By the end of the day I was feeling exhausted, but far healthier than when I came down.

I was reminded again today that it takes very little to experience absolute beauty and freedom.  No DVD’s, no PSP’s, no computers, no cell phones, no meetings, no schedules, no expectations.

A little sunshine, and a playful heart – Perfection!  Just as Nature Intended…

  1. I miss the kids playground years!! The enthusiasm on the childrens faces, the laughter, their burning red cheeks when they get inside, the laughs and the smiles. Our boys were skateboarders too and always loved watching them….so many happy memories!!!

    1. We have kids coming into the restaurant that are hideously overweight and sit at the table totally absorbed in their computer games. The folks don’t even attempt to engage them at all- it’s very sad that! Small people need to be outdoors, big people too!

  3. I spent a lot of time with my young nephews (8 and 10) and it’s very rare that they simply ‘go out to play’. When I was young (that makes me sound so old) that was what we would do. Every night, after dinner, the whole street would be in a desperate rush to get outside again and just play. Could be anything from football to hide and seek. It didn’t really matter, we were just having fun. Now I find my nephews rely on technology for fun and I feel they lack the imagination to create their own fun. It’s a shame.

    1. Agreed and it’s sad because nowadays it costs a fortune to keep our kids amused. Back in the day all our parents had to do was open the back door!My daughter has been raised with technology but I limit it and her birthday pressies are always bikes or scooters, this year – skateboard!

    1. Great memories! We have a lot to answer for when we focus our children’s interest on technology alone, kids need to run and play and explore.
